West Africa

Ten volcanic islands off West Africa. Atlantic islands, the history of Cidade Velha and the landscapes of Fogo.

Ten islands, nine inhabited: a volcanic archipelago of some 4,033 km² off West Africa. The Barlavento islands to the north are Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista; to the south, Sotavento gathers Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava.
Santiago is home to Praia, the capital, and to Cidade Velha, a World Heritage site. On Fogo the volcanic summit reaches 2,882 metres, the archipelago’s highest point. Portuguese is the official language; Cabo Verdean Creole is spoken daily.

Cape Verde’s second island at 785 km², Santo Antão is volcanic and very mountainous, with two high plateaus and steep valleys.

An active stratovolcano, Pico do Fogo rises to 2,829 m; its latest eruptions were in 1951, 1995 and 2014.

Founded in 1462 by Portuguese traders, Cidade Velha is the oldest settlement in Cape Verde and its former capital, the first European colonial settlement in the tropics.

Sal, with white sand beaches and over 350 days of sunshine a year, owes its name to its salt ponds.

Cape Verde’s third island at 631 km², Boa Vista is known for its large beaches such as Santa Mónica, Chaves or Varandinha, its turtles and its music.

A port city in the north of São Vicente island, founded in 1793, Mindelo is considered Cape Verde’s cultural capital.

A mountainous island of 343 km², São Nicolau rises to Monte Gordo, 1,312 m, in its western half.

A fishing port in the north of Santiago island, Tarrafal lies on its bay at the foot of the 643 m Monte Graciosa.

On the east coast of Sal, the Pedra de Lume salt ponds lie in the crater of an extinct volcano and have been worked since the late 18th century.

At 62.5 km², Brava is the smallest inhabited island of Cape Verde, but also the greenest.
